The governor of Zamfara State has officially announce his has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), according to Presidential aide, Bashir Ahmad and some close people to the presidency.
In a Social media post on Sunday, Ahmad wrote: “So Zamfara is back home, Welcome Matawalle.”
At the moment, The governor has not confirmed the news of his defection to APC, despite speculation of the defection from different quarters sources.
Rumours of his defection had gathered momentum from weeks ago with top party source revealing plans are in top gear to formally welcome governor Matawalle to the APC on Tuesday.
The Zamfara governor has avoided PDP gatherings of late, weeks ago, when PDP governors in the company of Uche Secondus, the party’s national chairman, stormed the capital of Akwa Ibom, for a meeting, governor matawalle was conspicuously absent. He sent his deputy to represent him.
When PDP governors also welcomed former Governor Donald Duke of Cross River State to the party from the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Zamfara state governor was also not there.
If the governor joins APC, he will become the latest Governor to defect to the ruling party in 2021 after David Umahi(Ebonyi) and Ben Ayade (Cross River).
Matawalle became governor after the Supreme Court ruled on the internal squabble that rocked the APC in 2019.
The court had annulled the votes of the APC in the 2019 elections on the grounds that the party was not eligible to field candidates over its inability to conduct primaries.
