The Kano State Government through the Ministry of Women Affairs has empowered 60 street beggars in the state.
The state recently launched a programme to curb the problem of roaming street beggars after many of them were arrested.
”The state government decided to empower some of the arrested beggars who are in dire need of help,” the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Dr. Zahra’u Muhammad Umar said while speaking at the inauguration of batch A of the Programme.
In her remarks, the wife of the Kano State Governor, Hajiya Hafsat Umar Ganduje, who was represented by the Commissioner for Higher Education Dr. Mariya Mahmood Bunkure, charged the beneficiaries to use the stipend judiciously, adding that the government will not tolerate street begging as it is going to prosecute any woman found begging on the street.
Beneficiaries, after the Batch A Program, thanked the government for the gesture and pledged to use the stipend judiciously.
